Leadership in Health Care

In modern clinical system, different professionals with different capabilities handle patients. This calls for proper communication within the health sector. Lack of effective and efficient communication may put the patients at risk, because communication problems may lead to medical errors by the practitioners. Medical errors is a big challenge facing health care leaders in the decision making process. However, team work and collaboration are very essential in the health sector decision making process, because all the participants work with a common goal of achieving their targets.

Nevertheless, most workers in the health care system lack proper communication and teamwork.. A team-centered leadership works better in the health sector setting due to the following: health practitioner’s work in an environment of trust and are free to give their opinions, ideas and raise questions on different concerns. Members’ open and free communication means that everyone comprehends one another’s ideas. It also allows people to perform and commit to their work. Team-centered leadership involves people who can work as a team.

However, leader-centered approach to decision making comprises achievement of organization goals through the mindset of the leader. The members follow what the leader directs them to do. An example of this leadership approach is authoritarian leadership where the leader has total power over the members. Transactional leadership presumes that members are paid for the work done. Another example is charismatic leadership where employees are highly encouraged by the leader to perform their duties. Moreover, team-centered leader differs from the leader-centered leadership in the following: in the leader-centered approach, the leader is the final decision maker unlike in the case of team-centered leadership. The leader in the team-centered approach is a member in the team that makes the decisions.

Moreover, in the modern world leaders in the the health sector face many challenges in terms of decision making in the team environment. In the decision making process where a team is involved, difficulties are experienced due to every member having different idea which hurdles the process of common decision making. Again, the leader may feel underestimated in the decision making process because everyone is equally treated in the process. The ideas of the leader are just the same as that of the other members. This may make the leader to feel embarrassed by his subordinates in the workplace.

In addition, the leader has a challenge of making sure that all the members are involved in the decision making process since every member must feel that he or she is part and parcel of the decisions made. This summoning of the members is not mostly possible. Another challenge arises when the leader has to ensure that every member is committed in the decision-making. In addition, the team leader has to ensure that his or her powers are limited in the decision-making so as to ensure that all the members participate fully in the process of decision-making. If the leader is not in a position to withhold authority in this process, then the members may not be free to give their views. This may render the decision process useless to the health sector.

However, some members may give irrelevant ideas and the leader has to find a way to shield them from the other members. This may lead to unnecessary arguments while the decision-making process is taking place. Besides, the leader in the team has to presume that all the members are in control of the role in the decision-making. This presents another challenge because the leader may be tempted to use his or her powers which ruins the decision making process. However, the leader has a task to ensure that the members have a right to pass the decisions they arrive at. This means that the members approve their decisions. Failure to which the decisions render worthiness affects the organization negatively.

Moreover, in the leader-centered decision making process, the leader is the sole decision maker and this means that there is no collaboration in the institution. Collaboration and unity are vital in the health setting. Solely made decisions are, therefore, not efficient and effective. This clearly portrays absence of unity in the health care system. The members, in their turn, may feel sidelined because the leader makes decisions for the entire sector. This, eventually, leads to failure of the decisions made because the members are reluctant to follow them. In addition, the members get no opportunity to give their ideas.

However, in this leadership approach, the leader does not consider the feelings of the members and that he or she dwells only on the chores of the members. This demonstrates no concern of the members and many loopholes in the decision making process. The members have no powers to approve the decisions. They have to follow the decisions as given by the leader. In addition, the members will not give their contributions to the leader and this leads to ineffective and unsound decisions. However, in the modern setting, health care designates practitioners with different tasks and timelines. The leader, thus, will have a challenge to meet everyone’s schedule. The authoritarian leadership will lead to lack of proper communication in health care system putting lives of the patients at risk. Lack of support by the leaders, may favor the members engage in illegal practices.

Moreover, the health care system faces medical errors as a result of failure to convey information appropriately. This problem is currently very common in health care systems of different countries. The leader has a challenge of finding proper means of getting information. Another challenge in this regard is lack of independence in decision- making. More time is required, conflict of ideas among the members, ignorance of the knowledge held by fellow members from other subjects and professions. Mistrust on the decisions of other members is also a hurdle that the leader faces in the decision making process. However, most health care workers neglect teamwork in their duties.

Moreover, leaders in the health care sector have attempted to solve the above challenges in various ways.. The leaders are trying to work together in order to have unity of purpose and enhance communication. This has a positive impact on the health care system because medical errors committed due to lack of proper communication are eliminated. This, further, means that the lives of patients are not at risk. The attempt to work together in health care system will mean that efficient and sound decisions are reached. Leaders have attempted to enhance teamwork for the attainment of the common goal of the organization. This has the effect of reducing disagreements in the organization. However, the leaders have tried to re-establish health care culture by use of their own model behavior so as to safe patient care and high quality service delivery.

In addition, the leaders have tried to scrutinize the documents of various applicants intending to work in the health sector aiming to ensure that the practitioners do not commit medical errors during their service delivery. Moreover, measures have been put in place to curb conflict of interest among the leaders in health care system. The governing bodies in hospitals have made a policy, which refers to the event of conflict. This policy will apply to all the participants in health care system. However, the leaders have tried to secure an environment that shields the staff involved in the use of technology from distractions. Therefore, there has been maximum utilization of technology in health care system to minimize errors.

Moreover, to address those challenges, a leader has to come up with a better way or a strategy to convince the members that they should plan to meet decision making at a specified time. This will enable the leader to have a humble time in convening of the meeting. Notification of the meeting is usually conveyed through a short message on the phone or by the use of an internal memo. This will facilitate faster deliberations and ensure that every member received notification about the meeting. This has also been done in an attempt to improve patient safety. The latter is realized when the communication among the health professionals is well established, therefore, no medical errors are committed due to poor conveying of information. In addition, the leaders have encouraged the staff to learn together, audit clinical procedures together and become creative and innovative to ensure continuity in their work. Different studies have identified what will encourage people to pursue health courses.
