Leadership in Health Care
In modern clinical system, different professionals with different capabilities handle patients. This calls for proper communication within the health sector. Lack of effective and efficient communication may put the patients at risk, because communication problems may lead to medical errors by the practitioners. Medical errors is a big challenge facing health care leaders in the decision making process. However, team work and collaboration are very essential in the health sector decision making process, because all the participants work with a common goal of achieving their targets.
Nevertheless, most workers in the health care system lack proper communication and teamwork.. A team-centered leadership works better in the health sector setting due to the following: health practitioner’s work in an environment of trust and are free to give their opinions, ideas and raise questions on different concerns. Members’ open and free communication means that everyone comprehends one another’s ideas. It also allows people to perform and commit to their work. Team-centered leadership involves people who can work as a team.
However, leader-centered approach to decision making comprises achievement of organization goals through the mindset of the leader. The members follow what the leader directs them to do. An example of this leadership approach is authoritarian leadership where the leader has total power over the members. Transactional leadership presumes that members are paid for the work done. Another example is charismatic leadership where employees are highly encouraged by the leader to perform their duties. Moreover, team-centered leader differs from the leader-centered leadership in the following: in the leader-centered approach, the leader is the final decision maker unlike in the case of team-centered leadership. The leader in the team-centered approach is a member in the team that makes the decisions.
Moreover, in the modern world leaders in the the health sector face many challenges in terms of decision making in the team environment. In the decision making process where a team is involved, difficulties are experienced due to every member having different idea which hurdles the process of common decision making. Again, the leader may feel underestimated in the decision making process because everyone is equally treated in the process. The ideas of the leader are just the same as that of the other members. This may make the leader to feel embarrassed by his subordinates in the workplace.
In addition, the leader has a challenge of making sure that all the members are involved in the decision making process since every member must feel that he or she is part and parcel of the decisions made. This summoning of the members is not mostly possible. Another challenge arises when the leader has to ensure that every member is committed in the decision-making. In addition, the team leader has to ensure that his or her powers are limited in the decision-making so as to ensure that all the members participate fully in the process of decision-making. If the leader is not in a position to withhold authority in this process, then the members may not be free to give their views. This may render the decision process useless to the health sector.
However, some members may give irrelevant ideas and the leader has to find a way to shield them from the other members. This may lead to unnecessary arguments while the decision-making process is taking place. Besides, the leader in the team has to presume that all the members are in control of the role in the decision-making. This presents another challenge because the leader may be tempted to use his or her powers which ruins the decision making process. However, the leader has a task to ensure that the members have a right to pass the decisions they arrive at. This means that the members approve their decisions. Failure to which the decisions render worthiness affects the organization negatively.
Moreover, in the leader-centered decision making process, the leader is the sole decision maker and this means that there is no collaboration in the institution. Collaboration and unity are vital in the health setting. Solely made decisions are, therefore, not efficient and effective. This clearly portrays absence of unity in the health care system. The members, in their turn, may feel sidelined because the leader makes decisions for the entire sector. This, eventually, leads to failure of the decisions made because the members are reluctant to follow them. In addition, the members get no opportunity to give their ideas.
However, in this leadership approach, the leader does not consider the feelings of the members and that he or she dwells only on the chores of the members. This demonstrates no concern of the members and many loopholes in the decision making process. The members have no powers to approve the decisions. They have to follow the decisions as given by the leader. In addition, the members will not give their contributions to the leader and this leads to ineffective and unsound decisions. However, in the modern setting, health care designates practitioners with different tasks and timelines. The leader, thus, will have a challenge to meet everyone’s schedule. The authoritarian leadership will lead to lack of proper communication in health care system putting lives of the patients at risk. Lack of support by the leaders, may favor the members engage in illegal practices.
Moreover, the health care system faces medical errors as a result of failure to convey information appropriately. This problem is currently very common in health care systems of different countries. The leader has a challenge of finding proper means of getting information. Another challenge in this regard is lack of independence in decision- making. More time is required, conflict of ideas among the members, ignorance of the knowledge held by fellow members from other subjects and professions. Mistrust on the decisions of other members is also a hurdle that the leader faces in the decision making process. However, most health care workers neglect teamwork in their duties.
Moreover, leaders in the health care sector have attempted to solve the above challenges in various ways.. The leaders are trying to work together in order to have unity of purpose and enhance communication. This has a positive impact on the health care system because medical errors committed due to lack of proper communication are eliminated. This, further, means that the lives of patients are not at risk. The attempt to work together in health care system will mean that efficient and sound decisions are reached. Leaders have attempted to enhance teamwork for the attainment of the common goal of the organization. This has the effect of reducing disagreements in the organization. However, the leaders have tried to re-establish health care culture by use of their own model behavior so as to safe patient care and high quality service delivery.
In addition, the leaders have tried to scrutinize the documents of various applicants intending to work in the health sector aiming to ensure that the practitioners do not commit medical errors during their service delivery. Moreover, measures have been put in place to curb conflict of interest among the leaders in health care system. The governing bodies in hospitals have made a policy, which refers to the event of conflict. This policy will apply to all the participants in health care system. However, the leaders have tried to secure an environment that shields the staff involved in the use of technology from distractions. Therefore, there has been maximum utilization of technology in health care system to minimize errors.
Moreover, to address those challenges, a leader has to come up with a better way or a strategy to convince the members that they should plan to meet decision making at a specified time. This will enable the leader to have a humble time in convening of the meeting. Notification of the meeting is usually conveyed through a short message on the phone or by the use of an internal memo. This will facilitate faster deliberations and ensure that every member received notification about the meeting. Moreover, the leaders in the health sector assume a servant position which aids them in the decision making process. The leader in health care system always welcomes various ideas from the staff. The leader also ensures that every item discussed is included in the decision-making process. Consideration of every individual ide, leads to strong spirit of teamwork.
Besides, the need for adversity in organization has made leaders to hide the challenges they face in the decision making process. This is done to ensure that the set objectives are realized. Moreover, the leaders have tried to stand strong on what they think is right and work to ensure that workers perform their work in efficiently. Workers are instilled with skills and proper way of performing tasks that enables health care system to move forward. The leaders have worked hard to ensure team building and collaboration in health care system. This has led to respect and trust in the workplace.
Primary care has strengthened. This has led to outpatient services, which, in turn, has made the patients to pay less hospital bills. Medical leaders have tried to eliminate unnecessary and bad care of the patients. Medical professionals have improved health care system by avoiding unworthy practices. This has also been done in an attempt to improve patient safety. The latter is realized when the communication among the health professionals is well established, therefore, no medical errors are committed due to poor conveying of information. In addition, the leaders have encouraged the staff to learn together, audit clinical procedures together and become creative and innovative to ensure continuity in their work. Since the leaders have encouraged working together for the common goal, this has led to reduced costs in payment of hospital bills by the patients. The leaders have laid policies to improve service provision to the patients. This has ensured that a lot of death cases due to poor service delivery is avoided. The leaders have laid down strategies to motivate the staff in their service delivery. Satisfaction of the patient shows that the working relationship is well set. Call for teamwork by the leaders favors innovations in health care system. Hence, the challenge of lack of innovations and invention is solved through working together. Moreover, leaders have created an inclusive style of doing things in health care system.
Furthermore, leaders have tried to address the gaps in their planning and management. The approach is realized through development efforts in the organization. Due to the nature of health care leaders, there is a strong asset in the modern world. Health care leaders are flexible in their tasks and able to act at their disposal to meet the goals set. They endure to different challenges in the decision making process. The leaders are open- minded to learn from their staff. This boosts the spirit of teamwork and encourages free giving of ideas in time of need. In addition, the leaders give duties to other staff effectively; they treat every member and his or her ideas equally. This ensures that the decision making process is not interrupted with unnecessary arguments. The leaders also act in a more professional way when handling the problems of staff members. A good leader has to be able to listen which improves collaboration and establishes effective working in the health care setting. Health care leaders put effort on self-awareness and manage their careers. This implies that the organization will benefit due to a powerful focus on molding better leaders for the time to come.
Leaders have to coach the staff on how to handle difficult tasks. This enhances their skills in the work place, hence, benefiting the patients. Ability to relate to all people makes the leaders to build and mend relationships. Most of the health care leaders know their weak points and their strengths. This means that they accept correction from other staff members in case of a problem in the decisions made.
Moreover, the leaders choose the right combination of professionals to work together; these are usually people with the same mindset and skills. This ensures proper teamwork and, hence, patients satisfaction. The leaders have collaborated with other sectors to provide the required work force in the health care sector so as to ensure that the workers fit the crucial job of treating people. The leaders have also endeavored to provide good working environment and proper remunerations. Since the current workforce cannot meet the future demand for health care services, the leaders have attempted to employ more workers in the field. Different studies have identified what will encourage people to pursue health courses. As most people do not go on the line of health sciences, there is need to identify what can entice them to join the profession. Creation of mentoring programs will ensure that more people are encouraged to join the profession.
In conclusion, the way a leader conducts herself or himself, to a larger extend,, will dictate the behavior of workers. In a team-centered leadership, all ideas of the members are considered towards the decision making process. This approach seems to be beneficial over others since all ideas of the members are taken into consideration which enhances proper communication and, hence, teamwork. In turn, an organization with well-established teamwork renders more quality services to the patients. This type of leadership encourages unity for the attainment of the common goal of health care provision.
Moreover, leader-centered approach is not reliable because a single individual makes decisions. This implies that the leader does not consider the ideas and feelings of other staff members. Absence of unity in health care setting may cause unnecessary medical errors, and in the worst cases even deaths of the patients. Moreover, various challenges that face health care system can be solved by collaboration and teamwork. The leader finds a way to protect the ideas of every staff member in the decision making process. This practice gives all the members morale to continue sharing ideas.
Additionally, the leader can use internal memo to communicate the date and the venue of the meeting so as to ensure that every member has the information to avail in the decision making process. Besides, the leaders are encouraged to manage and direct employees. This means that they must instill proper development skills to the latter. The employees, in their turn, will be able to face any challenge that comes on their way.
